PRAGUE FROM ALL ANGLES: Empty Nesters' Guide to the City of a Hundred Spires

Zeke and Terri at Old Town Square in Prague, Czech (October 2024)

When planning our European adventure, we knew Prague would be special, but sleeping on a boat on the Vltava River while watching swans glide past our window? That's the kind of unexpected magic that makes Prague unforgettable.

Our exploration of the Czech capital took us literally to new heights as we discovered why Prague is called the City of a Hundred Spires. Each tower climb revealed a different perspective of this architectural wonderland, from the baroque beauty of St. Nicholas Church Tower to the sweeping panoramas from Petrin Hill. Yes, our legs complained about all those stairs, but the sunset views made every step worthwhile!

The decision to stay on a boatel (a boat hotel) proved to be a highlight, offering a unique vantage point of Prague's riverfront life. Waking up to the gentle rocking of the Vltava and watching river traffic pass by gave us a perspective most visitors miss. Plus, the location put us within easy walking distance of both Prague Castle and Old Town Square.

Art lovers will find Prague a treasure trove of surprises. The Cubist Museum offered an fascinating look at how Czech artists interpreted this revolutionary art movement, while the Mucha Museum celebrated the art nouveau master Alphonse Mucha. The National Gallery's modern collections proved that Prague's artistic vision extends well beyond its medieval roots.

For fellow empty nesters considering Prague, here are our key tips:

  • Don't shy away from the tower climbs – the views are worth the effort

  • Consider unique accommodations like our boatel for a different perspective

  • Take advantage of early mornings to experience popular spots without crowds (and there will be crowds!)

  • Mix high culture (museums) with simple pleasures (riverside walks)

  • Save time for spontaneous discoveries away from the main tourist areas

Prague showed us that even well-visited destinations can surprise and delight when you're willing to experience them from different angles. Whether you're admiring the city from a tower, a riverboat, or a quiet cafe, each perspective reveals new layers of Prague's character.

Our time in the City of a Hundred Spires proved that the best travel experiences come from pushing beyond your comfort zone – whether that means climbing one more tower for the perfect sunset view or trying local specialties at a riverside pub. Prague may be an ancient city, but it kept us feeling young at heart.
